Why a Vacation Rental Beats a Hotel for Families and Groups in West Palm Beach

Living room in a West Palm BnBs vacation home

We're a little biased, since vacation homes are what we do. But after years of hosting, we've seen why so many travelers, especially families and groups, choose a house over a hotel. If you're weighing the two for a West Palm Beach trip, here's an honest look at what a vacation rental does well, and when a hotel might suit you better.

1. Room to spread out

In a hotel, a family of four or a group of friends usually means two rooms down the hall from each other, or everyone sharing one. In a house you get separate bedrooms, a living room to gather in, and space outside. Kids can go to bed while the adults stay up, and the early riser can make coffee without waking anyone.

Our homes in West Palm Beach range from two-bedroom houses for up to four guests to three-bedroom homes for up to six. You can see each layout on our BnBs page.

2. A kitchen (and fewer restaurant bills)

Eating every meal out adds up fast, and with little ones it can be exhausting. With a kitchen you can make breakfast before the beach, pack snacks and sandwiches, and save restaurant nights for the places you're really excited about. Grab produce at the Saturday GreenMarket on the waterfront (in season) and cook something local, or pick up a loaf from one of our favorite bakeries (here's our spotlight on aioli).

3. More time together

The best part of a group trip usually isn't the attraction itself. It's the long dinner, the card game, the morning coffee on the patio. A house gives you a shared space where all of that happens naturally, instead of trying to fit eight people around one hotel table.

4. Live like a local

Our homes are in SoSo, a residential neighborhood south of downtown West Palm Beach. Instead of a hotel corridor, you've got a quiet street, palm trees and the neighborhood coffee spots, with downtown, Palm Beach island and the beaches a short drive away. It's the version of West Palm we fell in love with.

5. Easy arrivals

We offer self check-in with clear instructions sent ahead of time, so there's no line at a front desk after a long travel day. Pull up, let yourself in, and start your vacation.

6. Hosts who actually live here

We own and manage all of our homes ourselves. There's no management company in between. If something comes up during your stay, you're talking to the people responsible for the house, and we're happy to share recommendations, from our favorite beaches to where to eat.

7. Professionally cleaned between every stay

Every one of our homes is professionally cleaned and disinfected between guests, so you walk into a fresh, ready-to-go house.

When a hotel might be the better choice

To be fair, a hotel is sometimes the right call:

  • Very short stays. For a one-night stopover, a hotel near the airport may be simpler.
  • Daily housekeeping and room service. Vacation homes are cleaned between stays, not every day.
  • Resort amenities. If an on-site spa, restaurant and concierge are the whole point of the trip, a resort delivers that.

For most families and groups staying a few nights or more, though, the extra space, kitchen and privacy of a home make the trip easier and more relaxed.

Tips for booking a vacation rental for a group

  • Count beds, not just guests. Check the bedroom and bed count against who's sharing.
  • Read the listing closely. Amenities, house rules and parking vary from home to home, so the Airbnb listing is the source of truth.
  • Book early for winter and spring. Peak season fills up first. See our guide to the best time to visit.
  • Ask the host. Not sure which home fits your group? Just ask.
